This coffee comes to us from Nyeri Kenya, Nyeri is a town situated in the Central Highlands of Kenya and is produced by members of the Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society. The Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society was founded in 1956 with only 250 members, making it one of Kenya’s oldest specialty coffee cooperatives. Today, over 15,000 small farmers and 19 different wet mills are members, making it one of the largest as well. Processed coffee arrives at Othaya for final milling, screening, sorting, cupping and grading – preparing the green coffee for sale. This society assists local farmers in everything from marketing to financing and has been instrumental in increasing the earning potential of the local producers.
Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society, the umbrella organization that includes Mahiga Factory has a unique double washed / double fermentation processing that is a rare practice that involves soaking the coffee twice under fresh water to achieve remarkable clarity and precision in flavor. Following fermentation, the coffee is soaked for an additional 16 hours, then carefully dried on raised tables over two weeks. This labor-intensive approach, coupled with pristine river water, enhances the coffee’s brightness and balance, producing a cup with clean, vibrant flavors that showcase the region’s terroir. Mahiga’s coffee reflects not just a unique flavor profile but also the collective effort of a cooperative dedicated to sustaining Kenya’s rich coffee heritage.
